Support ocean-bound plastic pollution collection in India with rePurpose Global
Kerala, the 'mountain place', is known for its mountainous terrain and Arabian Sea shoreline which supports tea, coffee and spice plantations as well as an abundance of wildlife. In Hindi, हरा कल means 'green tomorrow'.
70-80% of plastic packaging used in Kerala comprises hard-to-recycle, low-value plastics such as multi-layered plastic (MLP) packaging that are currently either being burnt or dumped in nature. These include soft, flexible types of packaging such as candy wrappers and chip packets. Low-value materials like MLP have a recovery rate of less than 5% and are most likely to leak into the natural environment and pollute our waterways.
With Project Hara Kal (हरा कल), we are creating a brand new waste collection supply chain for a group of villages to ensure the collection and ethical processing of neglected low-value plastic that would otherwise have been destined for our oceans. This one-of-a-kind project is a collaboration between rePurpose Global and Green Worms, one of India's most innovative waste management enterprises. The project engages the services of the Haritha Karma Sena (HKS), a fully women-led micro-entrepreneurial group and arguably one of the largest women’s networks in the world, to establish first-mile (door-to-door) waste collection services.
Support plastic waste collection by offsetting a weekly footprint per individual or household, calculated using an average of 2.5 people per household.
